I’m sitting in my office at 10:43 on a Wednesday night and this post just came to me and I had to publish it immediately.
When my Operations Manager, Diane, wakes up in the morning (she lives in France) and sees that I’ve posted a blog at 12:00 am without letting her edit it first, she might want to kill me. (Sorry Diane!)
I haven’t been drinking alcohol. I have to say that because I know that’s what some of you are thinking. (I actually gave up booze for 2014).
But that’s not the point!
The point is — yesterday I was interviewed by the gorgeous and freaking savvy Barbara Turley for Feminine Wealth TV (episode airs soon).
During the interview, Barbara asked me,
“Was there a moment when you stopped bing a ‘solopreneur’ and started being a ‘business owner'”?
Oooh Barbara! What an excellent question.
Here’s what I told her:
I was sitting at a table at a mastermind retreat in Bali in September 2014 listening to my mentor, Natalie MacNeil, talk about her plans for growing her business. Natalie told us that the key was to start building a team and stop trying to do it all by ourselves.
I started crying right there at the table.
I was crying tears of joy because I finally realized why I’d been feeling so fucking worn out.
I was crying tears of joy because I finally realized why I’d had fantasies of quitting my business and running away to Fiji and changing my name.
I was crying because I finally realized what I was doing wrong — I was trying to do it all by myself.
I picked up my pen and wrote down, “I will hire an Operations Manager by December 1st, 2014”.
And that’s the moment when I became a real business owner.
But wait. That’s not right. I need to backtrack to December 2013.
I was sitting at my desk in a dingy studio apartment in Montreal.
The Rule Breaker’s Club had finally become a real business. I was earning enough to live off of and declared myself “location independent”. But to be quite honest I was cold, stressed, and a bit depressed.
I felt stuck. I was overwhelmed and under-earning. I had no idea how to turn $2,000 per month into $4,000 per month or more. I’d hit my very own glass ceiling.
And then I registered for a free event hosted by Natalie MacNeil called “Limitless 2014”. As I watched Natalie interview some of my favorite entrepreneurs — Gabby Bernstein, Danielle LaPorte, Terri Cole — I felt SO FREAKING INSPIRED. I hadn’t felt that way in a long time.
At the end of “Limitless 2014” Natalie opened applications for her high level mastermind program. In September, the mastermind group would go to Bali for a retreat.
I applied. I got accepted. I went to Bali.
And that’s the moment I became a real business owner.
…to November when I enrolled in Denise Duffield Thomas‘ Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp.
Or I could backtrack to when I hired Kendrick Shope to be my busines coach in the summer of 2013.
Or I could backtrack to April 2012. Yes. April 2012.
I was sitting on a couch in a rental home that my family had just “moved” into after living in a hotel for a month. We were displaced after our house was hit by a tornado.
I was taking classes at the local college and planning on applying for doctoral programs in psychology. I’d just moved back home after 2 years in France and suffering from severe reverse culture shock.
I was sitting on a couch in a rental home when I started watching a free video training from Marie Forleo.
I’d been dabbling in entrepreneurship for a few months, but didn’t have faith that I could ever make enough money to live off of. Not really. I thought I needed more training, more credentials, more expertise.
At the end of the free video training, Marie opened enrollment to her signature program, B-School. In an instant, I threw away any thoughts of going to grad school.
And I said, “Fuck it, I’m going to B-School”.
That’s the moment that I became a real business owner.
They all are.
I invested time into learning more.
I invested money into being more.
I invested faith into the fact that I can do this.
I put some mother effing skin in the mother effing game.
The right time to invest in your business is when you want to take the next step. That’s all there is to it! I’m a firm believer that when the student is ready, the teacher will come.
