Why hello there friend!
Are you a service provider looking to grow your business past the six-figure mark?
Are you curious about or interested in potentially (or definitely) launching an online course in the next 6-12 months?
Wondering what specific services, packages, or course topics to choose from?
If so, you’re in the right place!
Welcome to the first part of what I hope will be an incredible journey.
If you’re struggling to book consistent clients and/or feel like you’re spinning your wheels, you’re not alone. Seriously. I’ve worked with hundreds of people who feel this way.
It’s a classic case of the paradox of choice.
Should you write proposals?
Do you need to be on Instagram?
Is it even possible to find clients in your niche?
These are common questions my clients ask and the reason why I’ve spent the past few months writing this in-depth post (and the subsequent posts in this series).
When I started my copywriting business back in 2012, I had no idea how to package my work or get clients. For a while I had 5 packages on my website but never sold one because I wound up writing custom proposals for each client.
I’ve come a long way since then and am excited to share my philosophy with you.
In this deep dive, 4-part series, I’m breaking down the steps you need to take to start making six figures in your online business with the 1-2 punch of having a signature service AND a signature course (more on that later!)
I’ve been an online business owner since 2011 specializing in copywriting, sales pages, and packaging signature services. You can read more about me/the biz here.
Since 2020 my team and I have been running a coaching program called Yay for 100K™ where we work with service providers (creatives, coaches, consultants) to help them build the foundations of a 6-figure business with the one-two punch of a booked out signature service AND a signature course.
Our secret sauce is that we’re really good at breaking down business concepts into simple, practical action steps while having FUN. We give our clients every single step, template, process to take, but what I enjoy most is the mindset coaching we get to do with our clients. My hope is that in this blog series you’ll get a taste of the power of my coaching style in written form. Enjoy!
⚠️IMPORTANT NOTE: This blog series is the most in-depth one I’ve ever written. I’m not expecting you to soak it all in on the first read. You might want to bookmark it for future reference, email it to yourself, and/or consume it in smaller pieces. It’s meant to be a resource that you come back to again and again.
Now that the housekeeping is out of the way…
*Cracks knuckles*
I’m going to start this post with a silly metaphor that I will almost certainly take too far.
(FYI kooky metaphors and visual frameworks are kind of my thing so you can expect a lot of that if you stick around)
You can pick a different starting point and destination if you wish. The exact details don’t matter. I promise this will make sense very quickly.
The important thing is…
In order to drive from Detroit to San Francisco you’ll need 3 main things
Say it with me: Car, gas, map! Car, gas, map! Car, gas, map!
You’d probably want plenty of delicious snacks, too, but for the sake of my metaphor let’s focus on the 3 above things.
Car, gas, map.
Here’s a visual in case that helps:
Simple enough, right?
I bet you can already guess what I’m going to say next:
I’m sure you saw this coming. I’m not trying to win any awards for the world’s most clever metaphor here.
You will not make it to your destination if you do not have a car in proper working order, enough fuel, or any idea of how to get there.
You absolutely need all 3 of these tools.
So… how exactly do the car, gas, and map relate to your online business?
Your beliefs are the container you operate in. The sum of your beliefs creates the world you see. Your beliefs are the car that will drive you to your destination.
Don’t believe that you are capable of building a six figure business? That’s like trying to drive your Grandma’s 1999 Ford Taurus with a door that barely shuts (aka my first car) to San Francisco. It probably won’t make it.
When you think about making 100K from your business in the next 12 months, what fears, hesitations, objections, questions, concerns, obstacles come to mind?
WRITE THEM DOWN.
Need help getting started? Here are some really common ones that pop up for our clients:
In Part 2, I will show you a cool strategy we like to use with our Yay for 100K™ to address the beliefs that not serving you if you want to make 100K in the next 12 months.
⚠️NOTE ⚠️Please don’t freak out that you’re not allowed to have doubts or that having a “negative thought” will hold you back. I try to stay away from the term “limiting beliefs” because I believe that all beliefs are neutral. Your fears and beliefs are your brain’s way of protecting you and serving you at one point. The question is: Is this belief currently helping me achieve my goal or not? It’s impossible to eliminate doubts. Doubts will not derail you. Doubts are a normal and healthy part of having a human brain. We’ll talk more about what you can do to build belief and face fears and doubts in Part 2.
Your motivation is the fuel that keeps you going when you’re halfway to your destination and want to give up.
Do you lack the motivation to keep marketing your services when you’re tired?
Do you sometimes wonder why you even tried to go on this road trip (i.e. start this business) in the first place?
Do you avoid doing the hard work (like putting yourself out there) in favor of spending weeks tinkering with your website?
If you answered “yes” to either of those questions, it is a sign that you need to connect with your fuel source– the reason why you want to build a six figure business.
And let me be clear:
Money is not your core motivation.
Money is a tool. An important one. But it is empty.
It is what the money will help you be, do, or have in your life that is the true motivation.
(Note: this doesn’t have to be some gigantic mission to change the world, either. In 2021 my big motivation was finally buying a home and saving for maternity leave.)
Once you get clear on what “drives” you, you will need to remind yourself of it on a regular basis. Think of these reminders as the “gas stations” you stop at to refuel on the way. I’ll show you exactly what I mean by this in Part 3 (coming May 2022).
Do you know how it will affect your life to earn 6 figures from your business?
What is it that you are specifically looking to achieve in your life?
Why do you want this business in the first place?
You’ve probably heard that it’s important to know your big WHY, but I’ve often found that advice unhelpful.
In Part 3 (coming May 2022) I’ll walk you through an exercise to get super specific about the goals that actually matter to you. This will help you to generate the motivation you need to keep focused when you feel like giving up (or watching Netflix…which is totally ok sometimes, too!)
Have you decided what route you’re going to take to get to San Francisco (i.e. six figures) or are you just winging it?
Are you overly attached to your plans and become inflexible when things don’t go accordingly?
Let’s say that on your road trip from Detroit to San Francisco you learn that there is a severe storm on your planned route.
What do you do:
(A) Give up and decide you’re going to stay where you are instead of driving all the way to San Francisco.
(B) Find a new route and adjust accordingly even if it takes a couple of days longer.
It might seem obvious in this case that if you are planning on going to San Francisco, you would pick B. And yet SO MANY business owners pick A when it comes to obstacles along their path to hitting 100K in revenue. At the first sign that they won’t hit the goal how or when they want, they shrink the goal down.
Do you have a plan of the specific actions you will take to earn $100K from your business in the next 12 months?
If you’re reading this post the answer is probably “no” and that’s ok! That’s why you’re here.
You likely came to this blog post expecting a list of tips or action steps. You wanted the strategy. The map.
I don’t want to leave you high and dry. The action steps matter. The strategy matters. The map matters.
In this post I’ve only just laid the foundation that I will build on in the subsequent posts.
In Part 4 (coming June 2022) I will give you the map for how to go from where you are now to bringing in 100K in revenue from your online business.
For now, keep in mind that you won’t be able to implement the strategy I teach you unless you have the right beliefs (car) and motivation (gas) to make the journey. That is the first piece to work on.
Remember: Car, gas, map.
That was a lot, but I hope you’ve already found it helpful.
Now that we’ve established the foundations, I’ll spend the next 3 posts diving into the nitty gritty of EACH of these elements and what exactly you need in place in terms of beliefs, motivation, and strategy to build a six figure business. (FYI this is all based on what we teach our Yay for 100K™ clients so if you’re loving this, you may want to check out our program!)
