I’m super excited about today’s video because I’m going to be sharing my three part formula for writing awesome Instagram captions that are not only witty and fun to read but help to get more engagement from your audience so that ultimately they help to grow your business.
Instagram is the hottest social media platform out there and as I’m sure you’ve noticed, some people are getting a lot more traction on it than others. Having a lot of followers, frankly, doesn’t make a big difference in the world of business if you’re not turning those followers into fans who are purchasing what you offer. One of the elements that makes the biggest impact on how well your Instagram posts do, other than the photography, are your captions.
So how would you like to get more engagement on your post and write wittier, more clever captions for your Instagram profile? What I wanna teach you today is my C.A.P. formula for writing great Instagram posts. The C.A.P. formula stands for content, action, personality and these are the three things that I think about every single time that I post on Instagram.
Let’s dive into each part of this formula and let me tell you exactly what you need to do to write your great Instagram captions. So that C stands for content. The content is what is this post about? What is the goal of this post and what is the general idea that you want to get across? Now there’s no one size fits all formula here. You can write long captions, you can write shorter captions. You just need to make sure you know what the goal of the post is. In fact, I decide the goal or purpose of every single one of my posts before I even find an image for those posts. When I look at my Instagram profile, I know that all of my posts tend to fall into one of the following categories. So we’ve got YouTube video teasers, business tips, entrepreneurial lifestyle, mine’s set in inspiration and even posts about my personal life.
A bonus tip for you here is to use your analytics, especially if you have a business account, you can go in and see which posts of yours from the past have gotten the most engagement and make sure to do more posts like those.
And like I said, you wanna have a variety of longer and shorter captions. The longer captions are the ones that can go deeper and help people to get to know you better, they can be more inspiring and contain more content. And the shorter captions can help to get a little bit more engagement in a fun post.
That brings me to the second part of the formula, A is for action. Every single one of your Instagram posts needs to have a call to action. You need to be getting your audience to do something. Now you can have a call to action that gets people to like your post, gets them to comment on your post or even gets them to leave Instagram and go to visit some other content like your YouTube channel or your news blog post. I love to use easy, simple questions as a way to get people to take action on my Instagram post. It’s great to ask people’s opinions about things or questions that are really easy for them to answer.
Don’t ask questions that make people have to think or be really vulnerable or share things that they don’t necessarily wanna share on the internet. You wanna make sure that you are making it an easy barrier to entry to comment on your post. Again, ask other people’s opinion on something is the easiest way to do this because people love to share their opinions. Another thing you can do is ask people to put a certain emoji in the comments, ask them to double tap on the post to like it if they agree with something. You can even give them a question with multiple choice answers, a, b, c, d and have them put their vote in the comments.
A bonus tip here is for you to think about or look at the posts on Instagram that you’ve commented on or engaged with recently. What made you engage with those posts? It’s always best to analyze your own behavior to get insight into how other people might react to your Instagram posts as well.
My final tip for you is to make sure that you inject personality into your posts and that’s what that P stands for in the C.A.P. formula. C.A.P. for caption. If you’ve watched any of my copywriting videos or taken any of my copywriting courses, you know that I leave personality for last because you don’t wanna add or inject cleverness or wittiness into your copy until you know that the content there is solid and you’re getting your point across.
When it comes to Instagram, one of my favorite ways to add personality is to add some emojis to the post. This one is easy, have fun with it and go sprinkle some emojis throughout your post.
The second thing I do is i make sure that my post passes the girlfriend test. So what this is, is I read through my content and I do this with all of my copy by the way, and I make sure that as I’m reading it, is it something that I would say out loud to my friend?
Is it something that sounds natural for me to say to somebody who I’m having a drink with out on a nice patio in the sunshine? If it sounds weird or sleazy or boring or too business like, that’s a place where you’re gonna wanna inject your personality.
And that brings me to my final tip, which is to ask yourself in your post, does it sound like you? This is really similar to the girlfriend test. The girlfriend test is more kind of looking at it with a global personality and then you wanna read it and say, does this sound like me? Is this something that I want to have on my Instagram profile as a representation of my brand my final bonus tip for you today is to make sure that you’re observing other Instagammers behavior. What are the profiles that you love? What are the posts that you engage with?
Analyze those and try to reverse engineer them. Now I would love just to check out your Instagram profile and I wanna make sure that you pop your Instagram handle in the comment below. So go ahead and do that right now and if you feel like it, please share with me what you loved about this video. Which part of the C.A.P. formula do you think is going to make the biggest impact on your Instagram profile. Is it having the content cleared up? Is it having a call to action in all of your posts? Or is it injecting more personality into your captions? If you haven’t already, though I hope you did, make sure to subscribe to my channel and like the video and I will see you next week.
