I don’t know if I can emphasize enough the fact that I’m LAZY.
I need you to know that I don’t love getting work done. In fact, the only reason I’m getting work done is because I am rewarding myself after this!
You are not the only person who hates writing. You’re not the only person who gets writer’s block. You’re not the only person who struggles to know what to say.
The difference between you and me is that I have a magical set of tools to help me overcome this dread and horror and GET IT DONE.
I’m going to talk to you about how to stop procrastinating when it comes to writing copy because this seems to be the WORST thing for people to do.
So first…
1. Break down your process
I talk a lot about the writing process and for good reason – the ONLY reason you will ever get writer’s block or procrastinate is because you don’t have a process. Everything else I’m going to teach you in this video / post is a part of the process
The ONLY reason you are procrastinating is because you don’t have a solid process.
Whenever you’re overwhelmed I want you to think of this motto “Take one small step!”
Are you trying to be brilliant off the top of your head? Get away from your computer, do a free write, refer back to your templates. What is the smallest thing you can do right now?
2. Engage with the topic
The problem is trying to sit down and have ideas about a topic that you haven’t been marinating in. If you’ve been doing all these things that are not creative, you’re not going to be in the right space to then jump into creativity. Try:
Connect with the topic to get in the zone
Watch a youtube video about the topic
Google the topic
Open one of your favorite books that talks about the topic
3. Set a timer
The temptation to take an early lunch break and watch Netflix is real (I’m currently using the “timer” method to write + film this post before I eat lunch and catch up on Scandal.
If you have a small piece of writing you need to do (take one small step) then give yourself 20 minutes to do so and then let yourself do something that you want to do instead ie a reward.
Gamification like this is a great method for creating behavior change. It’s why I walk more when I wear my FitBit (gotta hit those 10,000 steps) and why we all love checking things off of our to-do list.
Writing your own sales copy doesn't have to be painful.
